Do babies and toddlers care about radio?

In Eastern Slovakia new born babies are hooked up to headphones for music therapy to counter the trauma of birth. Now, their Polish neighbours are taking things one step further. A group of radio enthusiasts has launched a new station to cater to the needs of the youngest radio audience - babies, toddlers and small children.

The world's terrorism experts meet in Stockolm

Terrorism experts from around the world met for a conference in Stockholm recently. The delegates covered the entire spectrum of counter terrorism from senior soldiers and policemen, intelligence professionals, to diplomats and think-tank experts. They discussed a whole range of issues: How to define the ongoing conflict: is it a war on terror as US President George W. Bush has dubbed it or is it a "global insurgency" ? And how to defeat such an insurgency?

How garbage is causing a stink in Italian elections

Many people would say they hear a lot of garbage from politicians during election campaigns, but in Italy garbage is one of the hot issues in this election campaign - especially in the southern Campania region. Although the streets of Naples have finally been cleared of their huge piles of rubbish, the problem is as bad as ever on the city's outskirts. But what's even worse is the problem of toxic industrial waste, dumped in huge quantities by the local mafia - the comorra. Locals are falling ill, animals and crops are being poisoned - and yet no-one is being held accountable.

The European Parliament debates the possibility of an Olympic boycott

More and more European leaders have sharpened their tone over Tibet this week. Belgian Deputy Prime Minister Didier Reynders, said he would not rule out a boycott if the situation in Tibet worsens. And French President Nicolas Sarkozy did the same. Meanwhile the head of the European Parliament invited the Dalai Lama to address EU lawmakers on the situation in Tibet. And, he also raised the option of boycotting the opening ceremony. But what would a boycott achieve? Marco Cappato is an Italian liberal democrat member of the European Parliament.

The Francophone world celebrates its beloved French language

On Thursday the Francophone world celebrated the day of "Francophonie" - a
celebration of the French language wherever it's spoken. Within the EU no
one plays up their language as much as the French. And of course France is
famous for trying to resist the encroachment of the English language and
American culture in particular. Strict rules for example regulate the
amount of French music that has to be played on the radio, and there's
even a special department within France's Ministry of Culture devoted to
the French language. But what is the status of French in the world today?

How's life changed after the Schengen enlargement?

Crossing borders - something very easy to do in Europe. It's now three
months since nine new EU member states entered Europe's border free travel
zone, known as the Schengen area. Back in December last year border
checkpoints were ceremonially decommissioned and there was a sense of
optimism and excitement about what Schengen might bring for trade, tourism
and stronger links between countries. But have things really changed?

Could Turkey's Constitutional court ban the Prime minister, the President and the ruling party from politics?

Turkey has fought many internal political battles over the past few years.
Now, it's at a new crossroad. Last week Turkey's top state prosecutor,
Abdurrahman Yalcinkaya, launched a court case against the ruling AK Party.
The prosecutor claims the AK Party is trying to build an Islamic state
within secular Turkey. If successful, the AK Party would be banned, and 71
party members including the Prime Minister and President, face the risk of
being banned from politics for 5 years.

For the first time in history a German Chancellor addresses the Israeli Parliament

Angela Merkel this week became the first German Chancellor to address the
Israeli Parliament. Merkel's three day visit aimed to upgrade ties between
Israel and Germany and was described by both countries as exceptional.
Seven German ministers also accompanied the Chancellor for a joint sitting
with the Israeli cabinet - a level of consultation Germany usually
reserved for a small number of EU states. Paying tribute to the "special
relationship" between the two countries Chancellor Merkel said the
genocide by the Nazis filled Germans with shame. However, more than sixty
years after World War two an address in German in the Israeli parliament
remains controversial.

This month we want you to identify a French film director, writer and producer who's celebrating his birthday on March 18th. He was born in Paris to parents who were both scuba diving instructors and this very much influenced his childhood. He long thought about becoming a marine biologist, but then discovered film. Every week, we are giving you a different clue as to his identity. Here’s the second one: he produced the video clip for the following song by Madonna.

Preserving Polish culinary heritage

Something else that potentially needs an image revamp is Polish food. In the communist era, local dishes had a reputation for being gray and stogy. And as trendy bistros and international restaurants open up in the Polish capital, there’s fear traditional dishes could be left behind. Michal Kubicki from Polish Radio External Services set out culinary tour of Warsaw, and found, to his surprise, that Polish food still has a place in the hearts of its citizens.

Berlin launches a multi-million-euro advertising campaign to improve the German capital’s appeal

Last year, Berlin received some very unflattering media coverage. The country’s most respected news magazine, Der Spiegel, said Berlin was no longer a hip and happening European metropolis -- unlike Barcelona, Copenhagen or even the Estonian capital Tallinn. Berlin had, in the words of the magazine, missed the boat. But the city has refused to accept defeat. This week, Berlin launched a new slogan as part of a multi-million-euro advertising campaign, aimed at spicing up the German capital’s appeal. And as Thomas Marzahl reports from Berlin, the campaign for starters targets Berliners themselves.
